I will get a little abstract here, just to illustrate using the benchmark of a century old car, the venerable Ford Model T. I am in Canada and use metric, but realize most readers are in the USA, so will show units in the old English type that American use. Two days ago, I went on country jaunt on an arterial road, speed limit for the most part being 50 mph (80 kph). The road was fairly flat. In an old standard car, I would never of had to downshift for a hill, just the four stop lights I encountered. Starting off with the battery of my Ford Escape PHEV at 80% full. I drove 30 miles (49 km to be exact) in pure EV mode before my battery was at zero. That took me 38 minutes. Later when I recharged to 80%, the charge took 8.8 kWh. Now if I presume that the 85% of the electric power was successfully converted to mechanical power, that works out to an average of just under 15 horsepower being used on average.
